Dr. Iain Sanderson
Dr. Iain Sanderson is programme leader of, and lecturer on, the Fire Risk Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University. His doctoral research was in the area of mass smoke flow in buildings, in particular in relation to regulatory compliance.
Iain worked for Strathclyde Fire Brigade for 27 years before joining the school, during which time he specialised in fire safety for 17 years. In this role he was involved in the assessment of Fire Engineering proposals in major developments. He was also seconded to the Building Control Division of the Scottish Executive to assist in amending fire related aspects of the Scottish Building Regulations.
His main areas of lecturing are in the areas of Mass Smoke Flow in buildings; Fire Risk Assessment; Suppression Systems Design; Human Behaviour in Fire, and; Disability issues in Relation to Fire Safety Provisions.
In addition to lecturing, Iain also carries out third party reviews of Fire Engineering Strategies and runs CPD courses for external audiences on fire safety related topics. He is also on the Section 2 (fire safety) Working Group of Building Standards Division at Scottish Government level.
He is a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers and serves on the Scottish Branch council; a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.
He is a peer reviewer for the Fire Safety Journal and the International Association of Fire Safety and Science conference.
